The Commissioning Process

Rowan accepts a limited number of portrait commissions each year.

Each portrait is painted from life, following the traditional sight-size method in which the sitter is observed at a fixed distance, and the painting is developed directly in relation to what is seen. This approach, taught at the Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, allows for a close and sustained engagement with the sitter, working under natural light and at a one-to-one scale.

Sittings take place over a series of sessions, during which the painting is developed gradually. The process is deliberately measured, allowing time for observation, adjustment, and refinement. As a result, each work reflects not only the sitter's appearance but also the experience of their presence over time.

Rowan divides her time between Florence, London, and Gloucestershire, and sittings can be arranged accordingly.
